Color

I recently booked another small solo show in November, which I am very excited about (and will share more details about soon). As I have been thinking about which photographs to use, I’ve been looking at some of my recent images. For awhile, I had been spending a lot of time looking at light and form and composition, while the colors were secondary. It was good practice to be able to learn to see things without color, so I could get the other things, like composition and light, the way that I wanted them. This is one of the reasons my first show was in black and white. The color wasn’t essential to the photographs. I have realized, however, that lately I have been seeing colors differently than I have in the past. I am not only looking at the color of the subject, but, more often than not, I am also looking at the colors of the background, of the “space”, and how it all works together to create depth and texture. Color (or lack of it) affects the mood of the image and people’s reaction to it. I have decided that color is going to be a main theme for this show. I am experimenting more with seeing how color reacts with light and shape and am looking forward to seeing what what I can come up with.

The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.

  • More beautiful flowers!! I especially love the combination of the lilac, purple, and green in the first one!

  • Wish we lived closer, you know, at least on the same coast. It’s enriching to watch you progress as an artist and put your progression into words. I’m excited for you. And, that Faulkner quote is one of my favorites.

    • Thanks Dalissa. I wish we lived closer, too!

  • I am relatively new to your blog, reading it for maybe a couple of months. But I noticed right away that the colors on your images are very original. This are not the “right” colors, not natural colors- but yet they create those dreamy images that draw you into them. Good luck with your show! I am sure it will be a great success.

    • Thank you so much. Your comment means a lot.
